Criminal matters

A person may find themselves party to a criminal case, as the accused or as the victim, and in both cases the first steps shape the course of the case. We advise and represent clients in criminal matters from the report and the Public Prosecution investigation through to trial and appeal.

What this area covers

  • Attending the investigation of the accused before the Public Prosecution.
  • Applications for temporary release on bail.
  • Defence in misdemeanour and felony cases.
  • Representing victims and claiming compensation for damage.
  • Fraud, breach of trust and forgery cases.
  • Cybercrime and offences committed through social media.
  • Appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

In the early stages

It is advisable to consult a lawyer as early as possible, and to understand what you are accused of before signing any statement. The accused has the right to a lawyer, who can follow the procedure and submit requests and defences at the right time. If you receive a summons, make sure you know which authority issued it, why, and when, and contact your lawyer before the appointment if possible.

Confidentiality and follow-up

Criminal cases affect people’s reputations and livelihoods, so we treat everything a client tells us as confidential and discuss the case only with the client or someone they authorise. At each stage we explain what to expect in terms of procedures, hearings and dates, so nothing comes as a surprise, and what the client should do or avoid while the case is ongoing.

How we work

We study the case file and its evidence, identify the possible legal and factual defences, and explain the likely outcomes to the client realistically. We track appeal deadlines closely, because a missed deadline cannot be recovered. For victims, we help file and follow up the report, and claim compensation for the harm suffered.

After the judgment

If a judgment is not in the client’s favour, we study its reasoning, explain whether an appeal is worthwhile, and file the appeal on time. If the court awards compensation to a victim, we follow up its enforcement.

Documents that help us assess your matter

  • Any summons or notice from the police or the Public Prosecution.
  • A copy of the report or the case number.
  • Documents and messages relating to the incident.
  • Names and contact details of any witnesses.
